Overview
The Department of Classics at McMaster University presents a guest lecture by Dr. Matthew Sears (University of New Brunswick). Dr. Sears’ lecture is part of the Classical Association of Canada 2022 Lecture Tour:
“For Freedom or for Glory? Why the Greeks Fought Wars”
While it is now more palatable to justify wars in terms of struggles for freedom and the defense of the vulnerable, rather than adventures to win glory and fame, a careful look at the evidence from Classical Greece suggests that those Greeks who prioritized glory fought fewer and less destructive wars than those who claimed to fight for freedom.
